Salsa at Robson Square: 2026 schedule and tips

Free Sunday salsa and bachata at Robson Square: when it runs, where to go, the free beginner lesson, and why you don't need a partner.

Every summer, Robson Square turns into a free outdoor dance floor for salsa and bachata. It's one of my favourite free things in Vancouver, and one of the easiest ways to meet people while doing something.

Here is what I could confirm about the 2026 season, and what to expect if you go for the first time.

What it is

Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square is a free, outdoor community dance in downtown Vancouver. Baza Dance Society runs it now, with help from volunteers from the city's salsa and bachata scene.

It has a long history. The event started in 2006. Jennifer and Stephen Dancey ran it from 2008 to 2021, and Baza joined as co-hosts in 2022. From 2026 onwards, Wayne and Kristal Barbaza and the Baza team are the hosts.

Free doesn't mean cheap to run. The organizers say each Sunday costs about $3,600. That covers the space rental, a secure bag check room, open washrooms, cleaning, the sound system, and staff. Donations, sponsors and city grants pay for it. If you go and love it, consider chipping in.

When and where

  • When: Every Sunday afternoon in July and August 2026. The weeks alternate between salsa and bachata.
  • Where: Robson Square, 800 Robson St, Vancouver.
  • Cost: Free.

The 2026 season is now over. The official site lists the dates but not start times, so check the official Robson Square salsa page (opens in new tab) before you go next summer. It will have the current dates and any changes. (Checked October 2026.)

What to expect as a first-timer

You don't need experience or a partner.

The first 30 minutes are a free beginner lesson, and no partner is needed. Get there for the start so you catch it. After the lesson, open social dancing begins. Everyone rotates partners, so you will dance with lots of different people. That rotation is the magic. By the end of an afternoon you will have danced with a dozen strangers, and some of them will be there again next Sunday.

My advice: go alone if you have to. Stay for the social dancing, even if you feel clumsy. And go back the next week. The second Sunday is when faces start to look familiar.

There is a bag check room, so you don't have to dance with your backpack on.
